Although a Road Bike is suggested for Road Bike Type rides it is not required. Hybrid and mountain bikes can be used on these rides as well provided you are comfortable with the pace outline in the Posted Ride. This will be a B+/A- ride... average expected to come in within the average 18-19mph range. I changed the location to Yaphank Firehouse.
This is a "top-heavy" ride, meaning more miles in the beginning, a break at Nettie's (mile 35), then 10-15 miles to finish. We'll also take a quick water break before going through Grumman (mile 23).
Today's’ route to Great River will change up a bit towards the end of the ride - if the wind is in our favor; making this route pretty flat except for 2 overpasses. We will go the usual route heading south using the Connetquot Park bike bath. We’ll work our way down to Heckscher Park, do a loop where one can stretch the legs a bit if desired. Taking turns pulling would be appreciated! I would like to keep the road speed between 15 & 16 mph and come in at an average between 14.5 and 15.0
Please DO NOT PARK in the Meat Farms parking lot. Use the west side of the bank if the east side is full. Thanks!
We’ll be making a rest stop around mile 19 at the deli/bakery. The route back will be determined by the wind direction. If you want to bring stuff for after the ride please do. Weather permitting!
We'll start from the Sayville train station and head to the marina with brief rest stops along the way. Pack some snacks & drinks to keep yourself energized and hydrated.
We will be leaving promptly at 9:30 am, so please ensure to arrive at least 20 minutes in advance in order to get yourself & bike ready to ride.
Text me at 631-521-0688 if you're interested in joining this ride.
Changes/cancellations will be made prior to 7:30 am the morning of the ride.
Primary destination is Nettie's, may be Smith's Point or Patchogue, depending on wind direction and force. For this ride the Average speed is 11-12mph depending on riders, wind, tide, position of moon and leaders disposition with a distance of 20-26 miles. Nobody gets left behind and newbies always welcome and well taken care of. Any cancellation will be before 8:30am. No need to text me.
Please arrive at least 15 minutes before the ride start, to allow enough time for me to get everyone signed in and to "get yourself" ready.
This is a scenic Shelter Island Ride. At the ferry, ask for a round trip ticket for you and your bike, the ferry fee will be $6.00. We will meet at the RR lot, and at 10:00, go as a group to the ferry, a very short distance from the lot. Bathrooms are available at the ferry terminal on the Shelter Island side. Bill M. and Jodi S., SBRA members who live on Shelter Island, will help us tour this beautiful island. The ride is flat, rolling and hilly, there will be wait ups for those of us (including myself) who are slow going up hills. Bring a sandwich/snacks and drinks for a mid-ride break. Prior to our return to the ferry, Bill and Jodi told me that we are invited to their home for refreshments. From their home, the ride is about 3 miles to the ferry. NOTE: To join this ride you must text Bill G. at 631-356-3036 with your SBRA, emergency and cell number. This ride is limited to 12 riders, 20 if I split the ride with another leader. Come at least 20 minutes before 10;00. This ride is very weather, especially wind, dependent, so be sure to check the ride calendar by 07:15am the day of the ride. Questions, text me. Timewise this will be a lengthy ride, so plan your day accordingly. A sculpture garden (Ernst Neizvestny) has been added to this route.
The route will depend on the wind, but you will get a good workout. The cruising speed on flats is 13mph. After the ride everyone's welcome to go across the street to the steak house for lunch. Check back day of for any changes by 8am.
