Let's take an early September Saturday morning and head out to the East End to explore the magical beauty and excellent riding on Shelter Island, an island without a traffic light.
The ride will be about 36 miles and provide an overview of the island. We will stop at various points to enjoy special views and some unusual attractions. We will keep a steady pace, but won't rush, allowing us to enjoy the scenic vistas. Please note, Shelter Island is flat, rolling and hilly in many places, usually short hills, but somewhat frequent hills (some with real grades) that are mostly fun with some excellent downhills. Everyone will take the hills at their own pace and we will compress to allow the group to catch up.
We will meet at the Greenport LIRR parking lot and head over to the ferry to Shelter Island at 9:30. Please arrive early to give us time to gather. Bathrooms are available at the ferry terminal on the Shelter Island side. The ferry is $6.00 in cash for a round trip for you and your bike (make sure to get and save your round trip ticket). The fee is paid on the ferry.
IMPORTANT Please eat a good breakfast and bring substantial snacks and plenty of hydration. Also, please bring a sandwich or something for lunch, as we will not be making an indoor food stop. Near the end of the ride, we will stop by our place on Shelter Island. There will a short period of hanging out on our deck and we will have some additional snacks and drinks for all. Afterwards, we will make our way back to the ferry via a 3 mile route with some amazing views and homes.
Please let me know you will be joining us, by texting me at 917-921-5358, so I can judge how many folks will be on the deck. Also please bring an upbeat inquisitive attitude ready to explore. I will share the final (I'm always tweaking) ridewithgps file with those who contact me.
