Open letter to all SBRA members – The club needs you!

Important Information for all SBRA Members,

Elections for all SBRA Officers and Directors will take place at the January general membership meeting. According to the Club constitution, the President shall appoint a Nominating Committee whose duty it shall be to make nominations of the Officers and Directors. An appeal for volunteers for this committee was made at both the October and December general membership meetings and both times there were no volunteers. As a result, the slate of candidates for 2013 is undetermined.  Also, as per the Club constitution, Article 4 – Officers of the Organization, "No member shall be entitled to hold more than one office at the same time." Thus, Board members are prohibited from performing the duties of vacant positions. As a result, leaving any or all Officer/Director positions vacant will affect the current finances and continuing operations of the Club (ex. No Membership Director – no way to collect Club dues or to accept new members; no Education & Safety Director – no Super Cycling Saturday).

There are 13 open Officer/Director positions that need to be filled. They are: President, VP Operations, VP Administration, Treasurer, Recording Secretary, Corresponding Secretary, Advocacy Director, Social Director, Membership Director, Education & Safety Director, Rides Director, Web Editor and Webmaster.

At this time, we are in need of volunteers to either form a Nominating Committee immediately or to run for one of the open Officer/Director positions. Since this is an election, the fact that a current Board member may wish to run again should not prevent anyone else from running for the same position.

At the December meeting it was mentioned that the top 50 members in mileage rode almost 50% of all Club miles this past riding season. However, out of those 50 members, only 5 currently serve as Officers, Directors, or Chairpersons (22 positions), with one person serving in 2 positions and one person serving in 3.

Serving as a Director, Officer or Chairperson does require a commitment of time and effort but, without members willing to serve, the Club cannot survive. It's not just about the riding.

As concerned board members we feel that now is the time for members who have enjoyed the benefits of membership in SBRA to step forward and act accordingly ... Volunteer for the nominating committee or if their time allows and they really care to make a contribution and give back to the club put their name in for a board or committee position.

WE do thank all the members who have volunteered their time and efforts in the past and have made SBRA the Excellent club that it is. But now it is incumbent on members to take the next step and keep SBRA a viable entity.

We both thank you for taking the time to read this letter and hope it spurs members to action.
