My name is John Burgess, a long time sbra member. As stated, the BikeNY LI Harbors ride is scheduled for Sun. 6/28 at Suffolk Comm College.
There were 1500 riders last year, 2000 are anticipated this year. There are rides of 28, 50, 75 & 100 miles. Since I am a Professor of Physical Education and teach a cycling course at Suffolk, I was there to help out and did the 50 mile ride. It was a great day.
I am also a League of American Bicyclists, League Certified Instructor (LCI), and will be helping in a different capacity this year. A kids bike rally is planned if we can get approximately 15 mature teens or adult volunteers to run the different bike skill stations, about 10 mins. each. There will be a training session at SCC Brentwood within the next two weeks on a weekday early evening. Volunteers will work from about 9:30-1:15 on 6/28. Lunch and breakfast will be provided.
Stations include learning how to ride a straight line, efficient and effective starting and stopping, hazard avoidance and scanning and signaling. Other stations address specific traffic principles like yielding, approaching intersections, and exiting a driveway when your sight lines are limited.
We are all concerned about bicycle safety and education. How about teaching kids some of the skills we've all been doing for years. I guarantee a fun day. I thank you in advance for helping to make Suffolk County a safer and friendlier biking community. Sorry for the length of this post.
