Have you seen homeless people while riding?
What an interesting question!
Do we even "notice" homeless people, or are we more likely to simply not look at them because we can't help them?
Think about it and maybe keep this in mind on your next ride. Do you see them?
Maybe we can help a homeless person after all ... (read first SBRA Member's success story)
The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk County is a non-profit located in Patchogue. They run a program called Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF), a federally funded grant, via the Veterans Administration, which helps to house veterans who are homeless or on the verge of homelessness.
Since SBRA members ride a large portion of the roadways on Long Island, the (SSVF) has reached out to us with the hope that we may be able to assist them in finding these people in need. PLEASE, if you are coming across homeless people on your rides that (SSVF) may be able to assist please take a moment to help. Even if they are not veterans, (SSVF) can provide resources that can help these people, so it does not matter who they are (veteran or not).
NOTE: (SSVF) is NOT asking anyone to approach a homeless person (in the event that you come across them).
Please just drop a pin on a smart phone map and email it to: contributions@sbraweb.org
Then someone from the Outreach Program can go out and help these homeless people who likely don’t know that programs like SSVF exist.
