    Bicycle License Plates

On Feb 28, Queens Assemblyman Michael DenDekker proposed licensing bicycles and requiring annual inspections. A few days later, after a public outcry, he withdrew his legislation.

He had proposed a $25 registration the first year and a $5 renewal each year and claims that it would generate $1.875 million the first year and $375,000 each year thereafter. He claimed that he would spend the money on new bike lanes but also admits he envisions cameras in bike lanes to hold cyclists accountable with helmet and other laws.

His claim that bikes are "just like cars" brought this bit of sarcasm from one writer that "there is no word yet if the bicycles would have to pass emissions tests, too".

One article that I read pointed out that if one considers that car registration fees are based on vehicular weight, prorated, bike registrations should only cost a few cents and could not possibly recover the administrative costs.

Another article points out that several bike rides around the state, such as the NYC 5 Boro, could suffer and local economies hurt if riders from out of state were discouraged from participating.

Prior to proposing the legislation, assemblyman DenDekker did not consult with DOT or cycling clubs for their opinions on the issue.
